What do you guys think of a 'jobs' type section where members can list their services (commercial, but mostly otherwise) to the community.

Remember how we had that field called 'Services' in our profiles with the idea that it was to let other members know they could send us a PM and request something? The concept is similar to that except more efficient.

It would be more or less a listing of members offering their services in a specialized section. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking:
  • Incentive system (points, badges) + leader board/stats of most jobs accepted
  • Ecommerce system for those offering commercial services
  • Icon/Links in profiles/topic view if offering such services
  • Automatic inactivity moderation for when service providers leave the site
  • Specialized so members can set that status of the job, eg 'complete'
So what do you guys think of this idea, and what are your own ideas for it?

YES. I think this would be great idea to integrate into the website.
As a suggestion, although I am sure you already thought of it, is you should integrate it into user profiles, and allow user's to specify their services offered, whether they only do for paid, free, etc. And it should also be set up so perhaps there can be reviews/ratings so the quality, timeliness and cooperativeness of the service/service provider.
This would allow for a much more structured way to offer services, and it may be a better way to bring together project teams :D

Yes. It doesn't work, does it? I wish I could explain the vision of this I have in my head. To create an analogy.. the current system is like a bicycle.. and I want to replace that with a Ferrari.

Ahh I like this. A way to rate the services and therefore take precedence in the listings.

Of course everything is integrated. I'm writing the profiles myself coz IPB default just doesn't suffice. It needs to be developer orientated. We're game makers right? The social stuff is essential for community, but profiles need to display a user as the developer he is (coz all new members WILL be developers Posted Image). The GDU system gives IPB the job of posting topics and member management and just about ends there, and this for optimum integration. My vision was seamless integration, no limits, thats why its taken 13 months just to get a forum operating Posted Image It could be great, but perhaps impossible due to time constraints.

I could ramble for hours..Posted Image

thats a hell of an upgrade XD and i figure it doesnt work well cause not to many people offer their services and even fewer can really afford any payment. on a not related topic, we need to get a ton more traffic on this site!

Thus the upgrades :P You're absolutely right about that. It's an issue..RMXPU may have been ok a few backs but its really turned into a bit of a wreck. I need to get the new site up ASAP, but I have a ton of work to do and no time right now to work on it.

Also regarding the commercial services, people may be like Posted Image when they read that, but its really about not aiming for a mediocre website. I large, successful website would have such a feature, and you wouldn't spend all that time writing a site for a few posts a day. So, develop and then hope for success. I'm aiming high :)

good! cause seriously, theres a market for these old style games, jsut not enough peeople making them and once they are made, arent marketed to well. I hope to make a few f2p clones and original games and making a few pay to load cheap originals once the free to plays kinda take off and make a good name. well see how well that works lol

I like this idea, though I think it would also be nice to have a chat for each "shop" to be able to talk to 'customers' and possibly giving them quick previews of what they are getting. I know a lot of people are like me and don't like using MSN or yahoo messengers and prefer chat like is on the site, could just be as simple as a seperate chat channel.

Right now we have it as a requirement to provide examples of your work before it even gets approved.

I dont think an approval system would be very good for GDU.

There should still be a requirement for examples. The chances are that if you dont have examples people will just overlook you.
