I decided to attempt making a sprite and this is what I've come up with.

Posted Image

what do you guys think? It's supposed to be Dart of The Legend of Dragoon

Posted Image

I don't think Dart was a very good choice for a beginners project because of how intricate his armor is but what I'm most displeased about is his hair and his eyes. Constructive criticism is welcomed.

Wish I could think of some constructive critism for ya, maybe shading on the brown arm band?

That's so not your first attempt :P

@Dood: No, I used this sprite sheet

Posted Image

but I did make a few small changed as I was going. (reshaping the jaw slightly, making the wrists smaller, making the calfs and ankles smaller)

@Marked It is my first attempt, I'm just a patient person. I'd rather spend a long time on something and have it come out the way I want it then rush through something and be displeased with the outcome. I spent like 2 hours on it.

But thank you for the confidence booster! Posted Image Here it is with more shading:

Posted Image

I plan on getting into his movements today and I wanted to change it up a bit to give him a more personality when he walks. Any tips on making it still look natural would be helpful.

Whoa, looks really good for a first attempt! Is the sprite scaled? The pixels look a little stretched in some areas..

other than that, good job! And keep it up :)

Looks great, shade the boots a bit more as well, they look flat compared to the rest. Keep up the good work.

@kellessdee yeah it is. Heres the original size

Posted Image

I also shaded the boots more, reshaded the arm band since I wasn't very happy with the previous outcome and changed the eyes completely.

AWESOME. I'm with mark on this one...ARE YOU SURE this is your first attempt?

I wish I could be more constructive, but this looks really good! I would say the armor seems a little too "pillowy" but, considering it's based on dart, his armor IS kinda pillowy :/

Really nice, hope to see some more in the future :)

I'm super flattered that you guys are in doubt but I assure you it is my first sprite. I once spliced and recolored a battler. (Plus, I have no programs like photoshop, and I didn't have internet at the time so I did all the recoloring by hand, so it was pretty good practice)I'm super flattered that you guys are in doubt but I assure you it is my first sprite. ^There it is. I also did the weapon. As anyone who has played LoD probably has realized, I was trying to mimic Meru's hammer. I spliced the top of the hammer from another picture, all I did was the rod part and the bottom.
I also draw in real life so that might help with spriting.

You are a very good spriter. But here are my suggestion if you mind.

> Hair looks a bit wide/tall as compare to the source.
> (For me) The belt must be larger
> Kneepads are too high
> Armor color is too dark.

But anyway its fine right now hehe Posted Image

@Deathmoverz24Thank you for your advice. I agree with most of what you said but the color of his armor is actually darker in game than in that picture.
Posted Image
^thats a snapshot I took of the game.

Anyway, I lowered the knee pads a bit and changed the color and size of the belt to be more accurate.

I think maybe, the arm with the armor (or whatever it's called, tbh I haven't played legend of dragoon before) looks like it should be further away from his body than his other arm, as the shoulder pad should be a little bit wider.

Otherwise, it's looking good! They were very subtle changes, but it definitely looks better. Keep up the good work :)

@kellessdee Thanks for the advice but I think that it just looks like that in the picture because of the graphics. Sometimes random parts will jut out when you move the characters in certain directions.

Anyway, I'm going to start a Shana sprite (from the same game) but before I do that I want to edit the sprite sheet I'm using to make it thinner and less curvy because Shana is quite thin. This is what I've done so far

Posted Image

(my edit on the left, original on the right)
It ended up looking really weird in this picture when I enlarged it.

Posted Image
Posted Image

^and that's Shana.

By the way, I'm not worried about the shading yet, I'm asking for advice more on the shape and whether or not it looks natural and accurate to the character. It makes it difficult to critique shading on a scaled picture anyway.

I'm making a Meru sprite and this is it so far

Character it's based off of:

Any tips or critiques? (I'm aware that she's missing her armbands, calf bands and shoes but it's 3 in the morning so I'll do those tomorrow. This is just my result thus far.)

Your Shana image is broken.

That's all right, I ended up deleting it and looking for another one because I wasn't very pleased with the way it was coming out. I didn't find one to my liking so I may begin trying to reshape a sprite sheet or make one from scratch when I do Shana.

Ideally, I should use a thinner sprite sheet for Meru as well but I haven't been feeling like it.

@luz, I have just one comment about your LoD dart sprite, his knees look like their bending kinda inward? The left knee in particular. It might just be me. So if i'm just seeing things again I'm sorry.

Hm, I see what you mean. It may be because of the knee pads.

However, my Dart sprite got deleted accidentally so this is the only copy I have of it, the rest of the sprite sheet is gone. (Which is why there was such a long space between my first sprite and this new Meru one, I got aggravated and didn't feel like spriting) I'll have to remake it sometime. Looking back on it, I don't like the shading on the hair at all but Darts hair is pretty difficult.

Thanks for the input! :D
