Awesome points you have there. The middle man gets paid even if we do pirate their products. Nice observation. I never thought of it that way. :alright:

I think we are all very conditioned to thinking that the "Legitimate Copy" completely follows the definition of what their Lawyers want it to be, and not what is actually "Legitimate". If we start to think in terms of what is "Legitimate" by the definition of ordinary people, we start to realize that whole Middle Man / Publisher is the Real Pirate.

Thanks for the +rep folks!

As one who's pirated possibly tens of thousands of dollars worth in programs, I don't believe that pirating is half as horrible as politicians say it is. I may have a naive view here, but I don't see this as stealing someone else's work, but more as using the resources that are provided to me.

If I download something 'illegally' that I wouldnt buy anyway (ie, everything illegal i download anyways), then I'm not hurting anyone. I'm not making the world a worse place. There's nothing morally wrong. Breaking laws is only morally wrong if those laws properly reflect what is moral. What is 'criminal' has to do with morals and society's values. Think of the marijuana vs alcohol debate. One is legal, and one isnt. One cause a lot more injuries and problems than the other, and yet its legal. Just saying, just because its currently a law does not mean breaking that law is immoral. Its ironic I used that example since I support marijuana being illegal.

Therefore there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Its's hard for me to say what my opinion of piracy is, for the most part I'm against it as software is outrageously overpriced as it is, but at the same time there are normally very nice useful open source substitutions that work do everything the paid software does and sometimes more so theres most of the time not a reason to pirate anyways.

If we were just talking about torrents in general since they are the 99% used standard for piracy I'm not against torrents as there is some much needed stability in downloading using a torrent versus a regular download manager which can cause corupt files if you have internet issues. If I use a torrent it is usually for a piece of software I have already paid for.

I'm not against piracy exactly but I'm not for it either. On a side note while sure someone has to pay for the software somewhere along the way for it to be pirated, that one piece of software will be downloaded by thousands of people so the software companies do actually lose out on some of their profit though this is insignificant compared to how much they actually make off a single piece of software released too.

A little late for reply, but you know whats fucked up?

I had a manager from Pakistan that said you could go down to the local electronics store in his country and purchase bootlegged Microsoft OS's for very cheap, to what he described below one dollar.

Feels like that corporations are pointing the finger too much at their own country for piracy issues.

I pirate everything. I know its not right, and I completely understand the anger of companies that sell these products. On the other hand, as Marked said, I wouldn't buy these things (software, games, etc.) if I did have to pay for them, so in all reality, the companies whose products I pirate have not lost anything. I'm sure there are many exceptions, but this is likely the case in the overwhelming majority of illegal downloads.

I'm a bit late to the discussion.

I admit I pirate, mostly the REALLY expensive programs like photoshop.

but thinking back on it, i don't feel in the slightest bad. all i did was make a multi-millionaire lose 1000 dollars. Wow, I SURE harmed him. i don't think he can eat his 600 dollar dinners anymore, or get that new i-pod or whatever that just came out.

What can you do about it!? Life isn't fair. Innocent women and children in third world countries starve and get gunned down to the streets. Mega corporations are still making a fortune off from their products regardless of piracy. Let it go already. Piracy is a battle you'll never win. Minecraft's developer understands this, and even to some point, encourages piracy of his game if you can't afford it, because he'll accept anything if his game is going to gain popularity. People complaining about piracy blow things out of proportion way too much.

The problem with this theory is. Lets say 1000 people have the same view that you have. That's a million dollar that company just lost. See my point here? A couple thousand people could make the company lose millions.

On that note I do pirate things, so I understand I am costing these companies money. But at the same time. I just don't care, and if I was rich I'd buy it all. But as of now I'm broke.

The company doesn't lose money, they just don't gain money from piracy either.

As I said, I pirate everything, but I don't agree with the "they have enough money so it's justified" perspective. It doesn't make any difference if they have trillions of dollars, or twenty, that makes it no less theirs. The point is, they have nothing "less" to show when their products are pirated. In some cases it may stop them from getting more, but you are not actually taking something that they already have. All of their statistics and figures are calculated on the basis that everyone who pirates their stuff would have bought it, when that is far from the truth. Microsoft has not lost $12,000 dollars because I pirated VS 2010 Ultimate. I of course would not have paid that, and simply went with the free Enterprise edition. Same with Photoshop, I wouldn't have bought it, I would just being using a free, albeit less powerful, program like GIMP.
