Hey guys,

The recent survey at the early stages has shown that the users do not want to change the domain name. And I am not saying that we will. But our current domain expires in February, and I may renew it, or I could just buy another. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. So I'd like to get some names thrown around and see what we can come up with...

If we were to change the domain, I don't want to have anything to do with an engine in it. For example, no rmvxunlimited, or even rmunlimited. If possible, I'd like the word 'unlimited' to be involved, just to keep some aspect of what we've had since we started. But it doesn't have to of course. And perhaps something to show we're game makers, not gamers. For example, the word 'dev' is useful.

Ideas, go! You may make 1 word posts for this topic. Just throw some words around. :)

So something basically universal all around the game makers, correct? Or something in that direction?

Unlimited games?
Games unlimited?
Unlimited expressions? (This one is really random xD)

Well that is one way of saying it :) Just without any specific engine or class of engine.

Thanks for you ideas :) Maybe we should have a poll to see what member like after enough time.

As many as possible :) I'll use this topic as a reference if I do decide to change it...which seems likely at the moment.

Another thing. There are relevant names like gamedevunlimited which has obviously indicates game making, and our own 'unlimited' thingy. But I'd also like to consider a range of completely unique names. Like 1 or 2 words, like a brand type thing. The only example I can think of is the developer/designer website forrst. One word, pretty simple, but thats all thats needed. Its easier for your users to identify with.

I do like this one.
Think we should turn towards an all dev forum. Not just games.

I know I'm very new here but I wouldn't go for games unlimited as its very close to a gaming site: gaming unlimited.

I do quite like the idea of not having an engine specific name (although that is how I found the site by searching for some RMXP advise) as it should bring new people (not just RM users) new ideas new engines to discover and fresh conversation on the boards.

I certainly would prefer all that to be in one place as opposed to searching all over and having to join many forums. I think th way forward would be to have a multiple platform "Game Dev" site. Especially with the uprising of indie games, for which I love and run a website dedicated to.

As for the actual name I shall leave that in the communities hands as you guys have made this place what it is so far, so, rightfully, you should decide as to what the site should be called as I am but a humble new dude.

This one sounds good. Our XP in the name makes it seems as if we are XP only.

Names are pretty. But there lies the problem that hardly any of us are doing game development with any other engine except Enterbrain's RPG Maker series. I believe to exclude it in the name would be... Misleading.

I think Marked would like to attract those other game engine users as well :)

As crimson said, though I could get into quite a complicated discussion about it. This will be a very compact reply, otherwise no one will read it. I do not want the site to be limited to any engine or class of engine. Its true that the majority of users use RMXP, but why does that mean we can't change that? The attempts so far have been hugely unsuccessful. But, if we want to change in the future, lets not aim small and attract as many enterbrain users as we can, lets get as many game developers as we can. Its possible to obtain an overlapping of skills of members. For example, a spriter in RMXP can sprite for RMVX and any other 2D programs. I composer can compose for any type of engine.

I would also argue that if we cannot create a more active forum than what it is now with a random unrelated domain name, we may as well give up now. Again, its aiming too small. Search engines will not be a problem either as we got some nice SEO all across the site.

What do you think, Ark?

I like the idea of gamedevunlimited.net;

when developing games I actually first scope out my choices; then pick the right maker for the job.

Since RMXP + XAS is convienent I went with that for my project.

I also have a text based game comming out soon :)

Gamedevunlimited.net seems to be really popular :)

But, more ideas please! One bonus of another domain name is that I can work on the live site while this one still runs. Then on the day of the release I can turn this offline and transfer the database.

It's to long, by all standards web developers and web masters alike always suggest a small domain name as some people do not like typing long names. I say gdunlimited.com.

Oh, no, I agree Marked. I do not see anything wrong with it. But I don't think I made myself clear.
I think we should open ourselves to new engines, it just seems hard or silly because hardly any of us use engines other than RMs. So yeah, we start supporting other engines and people come here for help, or to start off and ask questions and we just blink at them with a confused look.

I have two ideas of extra game engines. How about Engine 001 (2D) and Platinum Arts Sandbox (3D)? I've used both and they're pretty easy to use. Although, I'm still a begginer in both engines.

I have never heard of this.

I must learn.

Edit: Scratch that, it's garbage.

Remember when suggesting names you should also take into account the length of your suggestion. It is bad practice to use long domain names.

Probably a good point.
To be honest. I just like RMXPUnlimited. If we had to change it, shouldn't it just be GDUnlimited? Instead of GameDevUnlimited?

Yes, I knew short domain names are preferred over short ones. I mean aside from that being obvious, I read it somewhere. :sweatdrop: Thanks for your suggestion, I quite like it :)

I see i see. I hadn't taken into account engines, only that specific ones should be excluded from the domain name so that possibility of supporting more is an option. Not that its not an option.. its impossible to measure the impact of certain engine users of the domain.

The decision to change the domain name is not because I think it deters non-rmxp users. A site named rpgmakerxp.com could still have any number of RMVX users.

I won't be thinking about what engines we will support until way way down the track. That is if I were planning some kind of huge site reform. Which I didn't say I was. That's not to say I am.
