Stand-alone games (No RTP)

Hey all,
I've noticed that a few of you have been wondering how to distribute your game without the RTP. Well, today I am going to show you how to do just that.

First, you'll need to download this zip file. It includes everything you'll need to make your game run without having RPG Maker XP installed.

Once you've downloaded the zip file, extract it to your game's directory and when it asks to overwrite, select "Yes to all".

Next, you'll have to disable the standard RTP by opening your project and selecting "Select RTP..." from the "Game" menu, and then changing "Standard" to "(None)".

That was easy, right? Well, here comes an even easier step: Compiling your game disk.

All you have to do is go to the "File" menu, and select "Compress Game Data...". Once you select this, a window should pop up asking you where you wish to save, and if you want to create an encrypted archive. If you are distributing your game to the public, select "Encrypted archive", otherwise, just leave it unchecked.

I hope this tutorial has helped. Let me know if you have any questions.

Fixing the "Failed to obtain a trial serial number from nTitles server" Error

Today I will show you how to fix this common error, as many people do not understand why they can't play RPG Maker XP. The answer is simple, RPG Maker XP was built for compatibility with Windows XP.

You will either get the exact error as above, "Failed to obtain a trial serial number from N Titles server." or a similar one saying that you cannot connect to N Titles server. I will show you how to fix both of these.

Failed to obtain a trial serial number from nTitles server

This is because you have Windows Vista.

1. Go to your root RMXP directory. (Usually CProgram Files\Enterbrain\RPGXP)
2. Right click RPGXP.exe and choose "Properties".
3. In the "Properties" popup, go to the "Compatibility" tab.
4. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)"
5. Check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator".
6. If you cannot check the box mentioned in step 5, follow steps 7 through 11.
7. Click on the button that says "Show settings for all users".
8. Click the "OK" button on the "Windows needs your permission to continue" button, after inputting the password of the specified administrator if necessary.
9. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)"
10. Check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator".
11. Click the "OK" button.
12. Click the "OK" button.
13. Right click PSIKey.dll and choose "Properties".
14. In the "Properties" popup, go to the "Security" tab.
15. Click on the "Advanced" button.
16. Highlight the permission entry that says "Users ([your computer's name]\Users)" where [your computer's name] is whatever you named your computer. (Mine is Media-PC)
17. Click the "Edit..." button.
18. Highlight the group "Users ([your computer's name]\Users)".
19. In the pop up that appears (It should be named "Permission Entry for PSIKey.dll", check the "Allow" box for the option "Full Control".
20. All of the "Allow" boxes below the box you just checked should now be checked as well.
21. Click the "OK" Button.
22. Check the box that says "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parents".
23. Click the "OK" button.
24. Click the "OK" Button.
25. Click the "OK" Button.
26. Run RPG Maker XP, and you should no longer get the error message!
27. If you still get the error message, log into the administrative account on the computer (With the owner's permission) and then run RPG Maker XP. It should work no matter what on that account, after you have successfully completed the above steps.
28. Have fun building games with the legal version of RPG Maker XP!

Cannot connect to the nTitles server
This is another common problem. Try one of the below things:

1. Check that you are connected to the internet, then try again.
2. Close all other applications(or just Internet Browsers) then try again.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Restart your router / Switch off WLAN switch and enable again if you have wireless internet.

Sprite Grid In Photoshop 7+

Have you ever wanted to make your sprite but didn't have a perfect grid to follow? Well here is a tutorial to set you on your way.

Here are some pics step by step.
First make an image width 128 height 256
Background transparent.

Step 1 you want to turn the grid on
http://img207.images...7/2100/ps1x.png

Step 2 you want to change the grid settings to what i have.
http://img4.imagesha.../4632/ps2jn.png
http://img196.images...6/342/ps3vy.png

Now once you have that there are your guides

Every 2 32x32 squares down is the standard sprite height now every 1 32x32 is the standard sprite width.
http://img28.imagesh...28/2856/ps4.png

Changing RMXP's Icons

First of all, download resource hacker. You can get from our Downloads Manager, Here.

Open up Resource Hacker.

Goto File -> Open, then navigate to your Project folder. Open the Game.exe file.
http://www.rmxpunlim...xp_icons/01.jpg

You will now see 4 drop-download folders in the program. Icon, Icon Group, Version Info and 24.

Click on the "Icon" drop-down folder. You will now see 8 other folders named 1 to 8. These are all from the same icon file, just different versions for different view types.
http://www.rmxpunlim...xp_icons/02.jpg

Now to change the icon.
Goto Actions -> Replace Icon...

This should bring the following window:
http://www.rmxpunlim...xp_icons/03.jpg

Select "Open file with new icon..." and select the icon for your game. You should have an icon ready if you're going to change it. If not, you can open .exe, .dll, .res files as well as .ico files for your chosen icon. .exe and .dll files may contain multiple icons, so you can open those files and choose an icon to replace the old one.

Click "Replace" to replace the Game.exe icon with your chosen icon.

Depending on the icon you have chosen for your game, you will see a different number of folders under the "icon" folder. In most cases though, everything should work fine. For this Tutorial, I chose a globe icon:
http://www.rmxpunlim...xp_icons/04.jpg

Goto File -> Save, to save your new Game.exe file.

Thats it, your icon is changed...
http://www.rmxpunlim...xp_icons/05.jpg

In the Screenshot above you can see there is a Game.exe file and a Game_original.exe file. Every time you save a file edited in Resource Hacker it will rename the original with _original.extension at the end, and save the edited version as the original file name. It's nothing you need to worry about changing icons. Resource Hacker can be used for a lot more things than changing icons, so it is sometimes necessary to save a backup.
