Project GDU - What do you want in profiles?

Posted by Marked, in Features 14 July 2011 · 307 views

Hi all,

I have decided the first major coding section of the site that I will do is profiles, since preliminary member-integration is up and running.

I have decided that we definitely need to ditch IPB profiles. We are game makers and developers and as such profiles need to be adapted to suit.

Here's the very beginning of profiles development. Note: This not the final website design:

Before I begin getting into this, I would like the members input on what they want to see in their profiles. Just throw your ideas out there :)

I've got a ton of ideas for it. One thing I plan to implement is a graphical skills set, like the following web development example:

I'm actually pretty content with what we have here. Not that I'd go against change, after all, it's literally for the better. I just wanted to come in and say that I for one *heart* the concept website design~ <3

I want everything we currently have. I also like a music player. It would be cool with we had a section to put links to our Youtube pages to show off our RPG Maker games.

-I was thinking about having custom colors/backgrounds. Like you can chose the color of the text, and backgrounds or you can also have an image instead of a color.
-Some place to put information about your projects. Not only games.
-A place to put a banner for your self maybe. It could be a banner for the name of your team, what you support, or just something funny and random.
-Maybe an area for comments. Hard to say.
-AHA very good idea here. A place for awards. Like if someone won MOTM it will display something saying "MOTM July 2011". Admins/Mods can add things like "Active", "Helpful", "Kind" to others profiles. Kind of like awards. Will also get the staff to get together more to figure out who was active, helpful and kind.

All i can come up with for now.

I would say change is good. The more you customize the more you separate yourself from other game making communities.

I say the basic information found in a IPB profile, but also have it so it has like a Project tab which will display the latest project, canceled projects, etc from that member. I also like th 'My Abilities' idea as well.

Great ideas so far :) I just like to get others ideas and build on from my own. Obviously the more minds thinking about this the better it will come out. Keep the ideas coming :D

One thing I can't do right now is code the various content into the profiles because I need to code those content sections first. There will be major projects component and this will need to be integrated into the profiles. But projects and getting projects advertised efficiently is a must.

I'm surprised you guys are satisfied with the default IPB profiles. Hopefully I can change your mind in the future :P

I got home at about 10:30pm today and whipped this up in a few hours. Not final, just playing around with some design:
Note: the comments don't render images properly, so the see the full image below, right-click->view image.

- How about having everything in moduals so that the layout for each profile could be customized for each of us.
- Challenge box.
- Video integration to show demo videos of upcoming projects.
- Quick link downloads for games or demos released.

Thanks for your reply :)

I wish I could do those, but i gotta wait till the games section is coded :/ But I'm definitely going over all these suggestion topics/blogs when the time comes :alright:

I just got IPB's BBCode parser to work across the entire website, super happy :D

This is an updated screenie of GDU Profiles before proper development has started (coz I'm bout to start) Posted Image
